LifeRoots Therapist Margo Devaney is excitedly gearing up to teach her Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course this summer in Edmonton. She also understands that not everyone has the time or resources to commit to an in-depth 8 week course, and many communities lack access to personalized mindfulness resources in their area. Did you know that developing a mindfulness practice can be especially valuable for those experiencing anxiety, depression or chronic pain? We’ve made it simple for you to get started by compiling the top 3 things you can do today to jumpstart your mindfulness practice:

MAKE A SPACE: It doesn’t have to be fancy, but find somewhere you can lay down a mat, cushion, or make some sort of little nest for yourself. Seeing it there will make a difference. It doesn’t have to be perfect. If you build it, it will be there.

CUE “THE PAUSE”: Try naming an event that happens several times a day – something like eating, seeing a notification on your phone, or starting your car. Noticing when it happens, see if you can use it as a cue to TAKE A PAUSE. Take a few mindful breaths, count to ten, or do a quick body scan. The more you practice, the more likely “the pause” will be there for you when you need it.

LET GO: See if it’s possible to let go of expectations for your mindfulness practice, even the desire for relaxation. It’s about noticing moment-to-moment thoughts, feelings or physical sensations – however that may be, at any given moment. When your mind wanders, this is the opportunity. The moment you realize you are not aware, you are.
