Why it’s helpful to talk about depression

For a lot of people, it feels yucky to talk about uncomfortable feelings. This is especially true when we are feeling depressed. It’s usually in these darker moments where we feel the most isolated and ashamed of our experience. It’s easy to feel alone. However, if you stop and think about the fact that at least 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental health illness in their lifetime,… you are far from alone. Luckily, because depression has been a common human experience, we have learnt a lot about how to help break through those feelings! A helpful first step is to simply acknowledge to ourselves (and eventually others) that something is amiss. When we gain this acceptance, we have more power to change what we will do about it. Knowledge is powerful in overcoming the stigma and isolation that surrounds depression. Here is a TED Talk by Kevin who was saved by four simple words: “I suffer from depression”.
